Geographical areas and transects of interest to BALTIC GAS objectives include
- A general transect along the salinity gradient from 32 ‰ in Skagerrak to 2 ‰ in the Bothnian Bay, a transect from shallower (with no gas) to thicker (with gas) Holocene mud layers in both high and low salinity regions (e.g. Aarhus Bay, the Arcona Basin and the Bothnian Bay).
- An eutrophication gradient from the bottom of a fjord towards the Baltic Sea (Himmerfjärden on the Swedish east coast).
- Gas seepage areas in northern Gdansk basin where pock marks are present.
- Depositional basins with accumulation of Holocene mud (Bornholm Basin, Arcona Basin, Mecklenburger Bay) which will be studied during student courses and thus add seismo-acoustic data.
